Book review | The Prison Healer - Lynette Noni
'I did not see that coming!', that was my first thought after finishing this book. I needed some time to think about what exactly happened, because the last pages were such a rollercoaster ride.
In The Prison Healer seventeen year old Kiva Meridan has worked as a healer in Zalindov, a death prison, for ten years. Kiva was forced to work in the prison after she and her father were captured under suspicions of working with the rebellions. One day a new prisoner arrives, who is rumoured to be the Rebel Queen. Kiva is threatened to keep her alive or else Tipp, her young assistent who is like a little brother to her, will be killed and Kiva herself as well. The Rebel Queen is sentenced to the Trial by Ordeal: a series of four trials which have to be won in order to gain freedom. The Rebel Queen is still on the brink of death and has no way of winning the trials, so Kiva volunteers as a champion to do the Trial of Ordeal instead of the Queen. If Kiva wins the four deathly challenges she will not only gain her own freedom, but also the Queen's. The only problem is that that none have ever survived the trials. Meanwhile Kiva meets the mysterious Jaren, a new inmate, who slowly wins her heart. Who is Jaren? And how did he end up in prison? And if Kiva has not got enough problems on her own, there is a deathly plague, which kills off all the prisoners. Is Kiva able to find a cure in time?
The Prison Healer might be my new favourite series and I cannot wait for the sequal to release later this year. I could not put the book down, because I wanted to know what Kiva had to do in each trial and how she would survive. Then there were also so many twists in this book, that my mind was blown. Some characters were not who they said they were and I am still left wondering what side everybody is on. I guess I will need to wait for the next book to get more answers. This was definitely a five star read to me.
